On 14 October 2026, the Chinese Language Department organised a Picture Book Guided Reading Activity as part of the post-examination programme for our Chinese Language Secondary 2 students. Through this one-hour activity, invited facilitators guided students in exploring meaningful picture books, encouraging them to think critically, appreciate different perspectives, and connect the stories to their own lives.
Aligned with our school’s vision of “Nurturing Future-Ready Canberrans”, the activity provided students with an engaging platform to deepen their appreciation of the Chinese language while developing essential life skills and positive values. Beyond language learning, the stories offered opportunities for students to reflect on family relationships, self-worth, empathy, and the importance of cherishing the people around them.
Three Stories, Three Meaningful Journeys
Students explored different picture books according to their classes, each offering its own valuable lessons and opportunities for reflection.
The Memory String – 2G3 students
Through The Memory String, students explored the significance of family memories and the emotions associated with loss, change, and acceptance. The story encouraged them to appreciate the enduring bonds between family members, understand the feelings of others, and recognise that embracing new relationships does not mean forgetting cherished memories. These reflections fostered gratitude, respect, and compassion.
Mole’s Gift – 2G21 and 2G22 students
Through Mole’s Gift, students reflected on self-worth, individuality, and the importance of recognising the unique qualities that each person possesses. The story reminded students that everyone has something valuable to offer, even when they may not recognise their own strengths. It encouraged them to appreciate themselves and others, build self-confidence, and develop a more inclusive mindset that respects individual differences.
Chou Chou – 2G23 and 2G1 students
Through Chou Chou, students explored the richness of childhood memories, the warmth of family relationships, and the value of cherishing the people who shape our lives. The story invited them to reflect on the connections between past and present, deepening their appreciation of family bonds and the memories that give meaning to everyday experiences.
Making Reading Meaningful
The Picture Book Guided Reading Activity demonstrated how literature can create meaningful learning experiences beyond the classroom. By engaging with stories that explored universal human experiences, students had the opportunity to strengthen their Chinese language appreciation while reflecting on values that are relevant to their everyday lives.
Through these shared reading experiences, we continue to nurture Canberrans who are curious in learning, resilient in facing challenges, and thoughtful in their interactions with others—young people who are ready to learn, grow, and contribute positively to the community.
